Brief of "What So Proudly We Hailed" Kindle Book :
One Christian family, one old boat, one test of faith to stay alive.

Imagine what would happen if eighty percent of the United States were without power for three or four months.

All banking and commercial transfers locked up; funds inaccessible.
Wholesale and retail distribution shut down; no computers to manage sales.
Passenger and freight lines grind to a halt; no electricity for the fuel pumps.
No cell phone or landline service; systems down indefinitely.
And the worst aspect of all; a total breakdown of law and order.

This is the setting of James Howard’s novel, What So Proudly We Hailed.

The unthinkable has happened; a limited nuclear missile strike has destroyed the power grid beyond any immediate repair. The protagonist, Jason Ribault, sensing the societal breakdown to come, flees with his family in an old cabin cruiser to wait out the worst of the chaos behind the deserted barrier islands of the South Carolina coast. There they listen to unfolding events on a short-wave radio, not the least of which concerns a hostile political and religious influence that seeks to seize control of a nation struggling to right itself once again.
Pursued by their own immediate dangers, the family is pushed farther and farther into the desolate salt marshes where they find other families in hiding. Eventually, anxious to unite with a family member in danger, they turn back into the chaos, to see the full extent of what has happened to the America they knew.

Electric with page-turning suspense, What So Proudly We Hailed is an eye-opening book every American must read.

James Howard is a veteran of the US Navy where he worked with nuclear weapons. He has also spent the last twenty years working in various aspects of heavy industry, including electrical power generation and distribution, and has learned much about our nation’s power grid. These experiences, combined with his devoted study of Bible prophesy, world history, and Islam, make him uniquely qualified to write this novel.

4What if...?

By Grady Harp

WHAT SO PROUDLY WE HAILED is a kindle book in the fashion of apocalyptic stories. James Howard knows his material he uses so well in this kindle book: he has been closely affiliated with the US Navy and with nuclear weapons and with the intricacies of the power grid of the United States. While other authors must search for written material from which to extract a novel, Howard has been there and knows just how treacherous are the ideas he proposes.

The concept of a nuclear attack from North Korea is a little too uncomfortably real to allow the reader to put this novel down once begun. Howard takes his main character and family into territory thought to be a safe haven from the chaos on the mainland, but systems fail and with a homeland in the throes of blatant crime with survival tenuous, and with the rise of a a wholly different religious threat, this journey of Jason Ribault and his family are placed in that position we all must face if annihilation threatens. How the Ribaults and fellow survivors cope is the fast-paced conclusion of this novel. The writing technique may be a bit raw but the story idea is a shocker and Howard makes it work well. 1A Waste of Time

If you are a serious fan of Post Apocalyptic fiction, pass on this one.

If the "Left Behind" type of silliness is your cup of tea, then drink up.

The only reason to finish this kindle book is to see how bad it can get.

Implausable plot, predictable characters, rediculous storyline...you name it.

While my religous beliefs may not dovetail with the authors', I am a Christian too.

So no, it's not that.

I got the kindle book as I'm a fan of the genre - and the premise is worth exploring and could serve as a really interesting canvas.

I read some other reviews stating that the religious commentaries we're a bit oppressive, but I'm such a fan of the survivalist/nuclear genre that I gave it a shot hoping it would just be an ebb in the background.

Unfortunately, the kindle book reads like a sermon virtually every chapter. It's a constant flow of prayer, hyper christianity vs. militant islam positioning.

Despite all that, I could have forgiven it if the underlying story was well structured and moving. It's not. You never get a feel for what's really going on elsewhere in the U.S., and where I had thought the story would focus on survival on the seas and sharing insights on the challenges one could expect following a limited tactical nuclear attack -- we never really get it.

Even for the most die hards of the genre like me, skip this one -- there are FAR better options available (The New Madrid Run, The Last Ship, come to mind that are also naval/sea related stories that are far superior).
