This book was quite different from Coleman's lighthearted fantasy reads. To me it felt like a combination of the Will Smith movie "7 Pounds" and the Nicholas Sparks book "The Notebook" (or at least the movie; have yet to read the book)
Jonathan is a quasi-billionaire that tries to deal with his wife's condition of early onset Alzheimer's. He re-examines his own life and priorities and decides to honor his wife by using his money to help others. The book is about how he distributes the money to various individuals. He basically uses his money to help someone in their time of need. He doesn't require repayment or anything like that but he does make each person adhere to a strict contract, which they help determine. It is quite touching to see all of these people's lives and the lengths they will go to for help. There were some very suspenseful parts of the book when you did not know whether or not a person was going to succeed.
I don't personally know someone with Alzheimer's but I think the Author did a great job of conveying the trials and suffering of the person with the disease and their friends and families.
All in all the book was a great roller coaster ride of emotions. It also contains some interesting nuggets of advice and wisdom.
I would recommend for any adults wanting a great read. Be warned if you know someone with Alzheimer's it might be extremely emotional.
Also there was a fun hidden reference to the band U2. (Which of course makes the book awesome)

I give this quick read; Gifts and Consequences, two thumbs up for a couple of reasons. First, having watched my sweet mother, deal with, and eventually pass away from, Alzheimers, I was glad Mr. Coleman treated the illness with tenderness and care. Second, the plot and story telling are wonderful! The characters are memorable and the twists and turns unexpected. It moved quickly and kept my interest till the end, both, in my opinion, admirable qualities in a book! Great job Daniel Coleman.

This is a good book for just about anyone. I could have read it to my husband and kids and they would have benefited from it as well. It kept me engaged throughout the entire book. Before I began I thought it would be like so many of the other books with the theme of wealthy person helps less fortunate people. I am happy to say that from the beginning of the book all the way to the end, I could not have been more wrong. Daniel Coleman has given the story an interesting twist and it works marvelously! The story is believable and the reading is enjoyable. I would highly recommend this book to any of you out there and will be recommending it to my book club.
