Tragedy awaits and he races to rescue his friend’s wife, only to be thwarted at every turn by the consequences of his earlier behaviour. Driven by an emotion stronger than gold fever, he stands and faces his accusers, and in doing so, learns about respect and responsibility, trust and friendship.

The dusty outback brought to lifeBy Night Bird
The thing I like most about 'outback' stories is the similarity, but with distinct differences, to classic 'Westerns'. Stretch has this kind of Australian charm and uniqueness combined with a story that grabs you on page one and doesn't let go until well after you've turned the last page.
Not being as familiar as an American Western, it is captivating to learn about the history of this alternative frontier of immense proportions. Stretch colours this in for you with a real sense of place, characters that are vividly drawn and a plot that is well paced and engaging.
This is an excellent story and well worthy of a 5 star rating.

A great story written by a tru-blue Australian. It covers the adventures, the life and love of one Simon O'Connor, runaway Irish lad from New York who travels the world living on his wits and quick turn of phrase. A trait that earns him the nickname 'Stretch' as he pushes the limits of the truth the the point of breaking.
A completely loveable lad who having spent his formative years isolating himself from his family and society, finds himself falling in love in the wilds of the Australian bush, a love that will save his life and complete his journey to manhood.

I would describe Brian Black's novel, 'Stretch' as a cross between a parochial romance of the Victorian era and a Western, even though it is set in the Australian Bush. It carries a great deal of old world charm and hums along at a pace that pitches it a little above moderate. Black has created some very believeable characters, particularly the daunting, but wonderful Susan O'Leary. The main character of the story, Simon Connor, otherwise known as Stretch is cast as the hard, gold prospector who has fallen on difficult times and has also fallen in love. His quest to find the girl he believes he loves is fraught with confrontation and old Australian bureaucracy. But Connor is a man's man, and meets his obstacles head on, even those presented by a dangerous foe. Black's story will appeal to lovers of Western Romance and adventure, even though it is set in the New South Wales territories at the turn on the nineteenth century. It is extremely well written and I congratulate Brian Black on his first novel.
